The engine room (or ER) of a large marine vessel such as a tug boat, fire boat, or mega ship houses the vessel’s prime mover, usually some variations of a heat engine – diesel engine, gas or steam turbine, or some combination of these. On a large percentage of vessels ships and boats, the engine room is located near the bottom, and at the rear or aft end of the vessel, and usually comprises few compartments. As shown in this video tour of a mega ship’s engine room, there are numerous components within the engine room including boilers, generators, fuel pumps, exhaust manifolds and more. A hot boiler room creates many problems. Typically, the ceiling of a boiler room is the bottom of the floor directly above and because heat rises the ceiling area is hot, extremely hot. Many times, we see temperatures exceeding 115°F! The floor above the boiler room radiates heat into the occupied space causing an unanticipated load on the cooling system. Silverstein Properties wanted to insulate the front, rear, and rear circle drum of a boiler in its recently acquired property, 3 Mitchell Place in New York City. The 26 story building previously housed the Beekman Tower Hotel. The boiler was running inefficiently and posed a safety hazard because of the high temperature (267°F) of the three components. The boiler must undergo a yearly inspection by an engineer, so ensuring his or her easy access to the boiler was a high priority as well.
