Removable Insulation Jackets Saving University $4000 per Year!

Another steam system ThermaXX’D!

ROI – 16 months

The Project

ThermaXX entered into contract September 2011 with Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) to provide Removable Insulation Jackets and Removable Insulation Covers in a mechanical room at Higgins Hall. The mechanical room was a typical university with steam. Although insulated during construction in the 1950’s, the insulation has since been removed and damaged as a result of day to day activities. ThermaXX completed an energy survey and worked with the maintenance department to prepare a scope of work that included replacing missing pipe insulation and installing removable jackets on the components such as steam traps, gate valves, wye strainers and PRV’s. In addition to heat loss, the work environment ambient temperatures were uncomfortable and approaching 90f. The insulation reduced the temperature in the mechanical room substantially.

About WCSU

Located in Danbury Connecticut, WCSU is located on 34 acres and has an enrollment of 5,000 students. Built in 1950, Higgins Hall was named in honor of Lothrop D. Higgins, a science professor who became the school’s second principal while the university was known as Danbury State Normal School. In 1962, an addition called Higgins Annex was added to the Hall, nearly doubling the size of the building to more than 85,000 square feet.

ThermaXX Role

ThermaXX LLC provided Removable Insulation Covers for a number of steam components including but not limited to: Gate Valves, Globe Valves, Steam Traps, Condensate Pumps, Butterfly Valves, Heat Exchangers, Pressure Reducing Valves, etc…. Work was completed in the Fall of 2011.

About Jackets

Standard insulation, installed during construction, is often removed and not replaced on piping components (pressure reducing valves, gate valves, steam traps, unions, etc…) that require routine maintenance. Removable Insulation Jackets are designed to insulate those components and allow maintenance personnel to quickly remove and replace the insulation to facilitate general maintenance. In addition to keeping the work place safe, insulation jackets also keep the HEAT where it belongs….in the pipe!
